2013 Season 3 Bach Mass in B Minor

2013 Season 3 Poster

Music Director Sadaharu Muramatsu realizes one of his long held ambitions to conduct Bach’s last major work and one of the supreme achievements of classical music. While the heavenly Sanctus was composed in 1724, the work was only put together in the last years of Bach’s life, reworking other pieces written in previous decades. What drove Bach to do this? There was no performance in view at the time, and in fact the Mass was not performed in its entirety until more than 100 years after his death in 1859. Did Bach sense that a monumental edifice was needed to complete his life’s work? Many mysteries surround this masterwork.
